ROGUE OF RAGE
{ wear }

Why is it that whenever someone writes about the Lalider-Strondes as siblings, Dirk is always the oldest? In the B1 Universe Roxy’s significantly older than everyone else.

Okay, I can be relieved now. Rogue outfit is boss.

(I’d have preferred short-sleeves, but it’s cool—Roxy owns that shit.)

Oh wow. One of my absolute favorite characters is suddenly getting praised hardcore. By the fandom’s favorite, no less.

See, Roxy babby, they DO appreciate you!

Aw, girl. You’re speaking to me. Friendship is awesome! It should be just as important as romance.

So I don’t think Dirk is as free of Trickster influence as we’re all immediately assuming. Here, let me explain.

You know, it’s interesting, because I’ve been in Dirk’s situation before, and while it sounds really grand and great and like a big personal step to tell someone they’re a coward and an asshole for not facing you and just saying they don’t want to be around you anymore, it’s also hypocritical.

Because, see, I seriously doubt that if Jake had honestly said “Hey, man, your clingy shit is really bothering me and I don’t want to go out anymore” that Dirk would’ve been okay with it. Maybe he would have been, but I doubt it, because that’s a very difficult pill to swallow even as an adult, and as great as Dirk is, he’s still just a teenager.

This is also evidenced by the incessant messaging Dirk did while Jake was getting some space. Am I to believe that someone who couldn’t even respect his partner’s clear signals of wanting to be left alone for a bit would be okay with being broken up with? Especially one with a history of needing control?

No. What I think happened is that Dirk knew the writing was on the wall with this one, and since he’s too fucking cool to live, he couldn’t allow himself to be broken up with and get emotional, so instead he got angry. Told himself over and over how much of a dick Jake was for ignoring him, and how he deserved better, and how yeah he was clingy, but if Jake had only just talked to him like he’d wanted, it would’ve been fine.

It’s almost painful for me to read this stuff because I have lived that same exact situation. Telling yourself what a jerkoff the other person is so that you’re angry enough to stave off tears and the deep sadness that would come with knowing that a) someone you love deeply isn’t as invested and b) the reason is of your own doing.

Dirk, babe, I love you, but you’ve got this all wrong. Projecting all of your self-hate onto people you love is not empowerment. Instead, you need to forgive yourself for your shortcomings, and accept that people will love you regardless. You don’t have to be cool and perfect 100% of the time; by that token, neither do your friends, so you have to give them some leeway too.

Learn what people are willing to give, and then decide if it satisfies you or not. If yes, then end of story, don’t go looking for more. If no, then cut it off and deal.

(The bit about projecting self-hate includes Roxy, by the way; I sure as fuck hope Dirk wouldn’t speak that way to her non-Tricksterfied self, because if so, I want to know why the fandom isn’t up in arms about how callous he’s being about her feelings. Like, seriously. Can you imagine the backlash there’d be if Jake had reacted that way to Dirk’s confession? Jesus.)

Wait. Are we surprised that Dirk isn’t into Roxy?

I mean, yes, it’s still very sad that Roxy’s feelings are unrequited, but I thought that was common knowledge canonically. Hence the lampshading in the update.

“You Bastard”

Bladekindeyewear suggested recently in a theory that the only way Dave will survive his climactic encounter with Lord English would be if Roxy yanks the sacrifice out from under him.

We have a few hints in that direction:

  • A mother will do whatever is best for her children” (notice the use of plural children there, suggesting that it’s not just related to Rose)
  • Roxy’s relationship to Calliope and her role as a Hero of Void, linked to oblivion
  • Roxy’s a bit of a loner, her dreamself often out in the Furthest Ring and never the object of anyone’s affections
  • Dealing with the fallout of someone else dying for him and maturing is the only other narrative trajectory I can see resulting for Dave
  • This exchange: you bastard

I thought it was sort of weird to have a callback to Maplehoof here, especially since Minihoof is a thing. But I’m looking at it now and realizing that Hussie may be setting up a theme of things Rose loves dying to protect Dave. (This is bad news for Kanaya if I’m right.)

Bladekindeyewear is probably correct in the assumption that the chances of this are slim to none, but Hussie likes to subvert obvious foreshadowing (except, of course, when he doesn’t) and he loves making throwaway gags plot-relevant, often in really upsetting and tragic way.

If this does go down, I’m wondering how Dave and Rose’s relationship will be affected.

God Tiers and Whatnot

So we know of two different ways to ascend to God Tier:

1) Your waking self dies and is placed on a Quest Bed on your planet, reviving and superpowering your dreamself.

2) Your dreamself dies in the Quest Crypt deep in the heart of your dream planet’s moon.

Of course, there might be more avenues Hussie hasn’t revealed yet, but as it stands, what I gather from this is that there is no possible way for Jake to go God Tier. (Barring resuscitation of his dreamself via Jane or something; the sprite avenue has closed since it’s now full of Eridan and Sollux.)

Dirk, Jane, and Roxy are all on their dreamselves now. In fact, I had anticipated prior to the recent updates that the Condesce was going to kill her and pitch her down into the depths of Derse’s moon, inadvertently (or perhaps intentionally) causing her to ascend. (This may still happen, as Roxy’s still in her custody.) Jane and Dirk could also conceivably go through the same thing and got tiger.

But Jake can’t. He only has his original, waking self left.

Luckily for him he’s been assigned the one aspect that might allow him to overcome this handicap.
